The beer is perfect for a huge number of cocktails, but the grapefruit element works exceptionally well with whisky. Produced by the 530 year-old Stiegl Brauerei in Salzburg, Austria, Stiegl Grapefruit Radler is an eminently refreshing low alcohol beer, at just 2% abv, comprising grapefruit soda and Stiegl’s outstanding Goldbräu lager. My favourite beer for cocktail recipes also happens to have a prominent grapefruit element. Many famous beer cocktails have since followed, with notable examples including the classic michelada, which comprises beer, lime juice, chilli and various sauces Black Velvet made with stout and white sparkling wine such as Champagne or Prosecco, and many more. The first beer cocktail is believed to date back to the early 1800s, first mentioned in print in an English publication, known as a ‘shandygaff’, containing beer, lemonade and ginger. It’s not surprising that spirits are still generally considered the go-to alcohol choice when considering cocktail recipes, but beer cocktails are finally seeing a fresh rise in popularity. ![]()
